Train your team with experienced CFD specialists

Being a research oriented organization we have vast experience in scientific teaching through proven careers in leading academic and research institutions. Combined with our industrial experience with offer the best balance between theory and practical application into two stages of training. Teaching takes place at our classrooms or on-site at customer’s premises:

  1. Classroom training: Takes place every three months on our premises from our dedicated staff. Training can even be streamed online for a remote participation
  2. On-site training: Depending on the number of participants it might be more effective to arrange a dedicated on-site training on customer’s premises. This can also be done through private webinars.

Courses are logically structured in order to enhance the learning experience. They usually last between 8 and 10 hours per day excluding the breaks. We supply all the required computing infrastructure but trainees can bring their own laptop and use a preconfigured USB stick that has all the relevant software preconfigured.

At the end of each course there is a dedicated section for questions. We encourage the participants to prepare and bring their questions before attending the course.

The introductory course is always delivered in advanced of the applied CFD course in order to allow participation to both courses. In addition there is 20% discount for those who book both training seminars.

Introduction to CFD - 2 Days course

The course is designed to provide a complete overview of a typical CFD workflow as used in the industry. We aim at introducing the practical aspects on how CFD is deployed for real product development and design. Skills acquired during the course are carried over to the applied CFD course.

Target audience:

  • Individuals looking to enter the CFD field.
  • Existing users with academic only experience.
  • Engineering managers that need to supervise CFD projects

Pre-requisites:

  • An engineering or related background
  • Good computer usage skills ( Linux knowledge is an advantage)

Day 1

Part A

  1. The need for CFD: Outlines the history of CFD and why we need it.
  2. CFD applications: Description of where CFD can be applied and its potential advantages and limitations.
  3. Outline of a typical CFD process: Brief description of each CFD stage from geometry generation to meshing, solve and post processing.
  4. Software outline: Explore the available options for both open source and closed source codes covering the entire CFD process.

Part B

  1. Introduction to computational engineering: Finite Volume method, Finite differencing.
  2. Introduction to Turbulence: Physics and its modelling, RANS, High fidelity scale resolving simulations (LES), y plus selection criteria.
  3. Boundary conditions: Selection method, wall functions, time-varying and frequently occurring configurations.
  4. Initialization: Steady and unsteady case initialization, Turbulence field initialization, Hybrid initialization methods.

Day 2

Part A

  1. Geometry generation: Guidelines on how to make CFD friendly surfaces. Reconstruction from blueprints and geometry simplifications and repairs.
  2. Computational domain creation (Meshing): Meshing strategies, boundary layer creation, leak detection, density regions, Fluid domains.
  3. Solving: Physics selection, Matrix solvers, Equation coupling, convergence, relaxation factors.
  4. Post processing: Clip planes, iso-surface, iso-volumes, streamlines

Part B

  1. Engineering analysis on an external flow case: automotive, Aircraft, motorbike
  2. Engineering analysis on an internal flow case: Cabin flow, pipe flow
  3. Training review and questions.
